Auto Dealerships

dealership

Every month, individual automobile dealerships across the United States experience significant losses due to theft and vandalism.

A typical dealership may have hundreds or even thousands of automobiles in inventory on their outdoor sales lots leaving them vulnerable in the overnight hours when the dealership is closed.

Unprotected Dealership losses can average as much as $10,000 per month. Stolen property ranges from simple parts such as running boards and mirrors to tires and rims and in some cases entire vehicles.

Traditional Dealership Security is Ineffective

Most dealerships employ some counter measures to reduce losses with varying degrees of success. The most popular approaches include human guards and/or surveillance cameras recorded to Digital Video Recorders. Each of these measures provides a certain level of deterrence, however each measure also has it’s own weakness, which renders it ineffective and lures dealers into a false sense of security.

The Staggering Cost of Human Presence

While human guards may sound good in theory, they are only human and expensive to be sure. Automobile dealerships have paid in excess of $25,000 per month to protect their valuable assets in the overnight hours. That amounts to $300,000 annually, a very heavy load on the profit and loss statement. But are dealerships really getting the security implied by human presence?

Traditional Security Subject to Human Limitations

Guards can only be in one place at one time leaving the other 99% of your space unattended. Further, Guards are distracted in a variety of ways, such as phone calls, email, text messages, blinking, interaction with colleagues, drowsiness and boredom which all lead to reduced effectiveness. Even worse, Guards also become targets for perpetrators leading to injury and death.

Traditional Surveillance Systems provide a false sense of security

Similarly, DVR Recorded Cameras lure us into a false sense of effectiveness. The visual deterrence of cameras being present and the video we hope to garner as we attempt to recover stolen property with the help of the authorities is a long shot at best. Unclear images, poor lighting at night, incorrect angles and lenses of cameras are all unfortunate contributors to the ineffectiveness of this counter measure.

Perpetrators Are Aware of the Weaknesses of Traditional Camera Systems

Perpetrators have become immune to the proverbial “Eye-in-the-sky” for some very specific reasons. First of all they know that no security officer or guard can watch all cameras displayed on one screen at the same time. It is humanly impossible for our eyes and brains to process that many images at once.

Secondly, Perpetrators know that recorded footage typically gets reviewed only upon an identified incident. That means, only once something is missing.

Finally, perpetrators know that if footage is reviewed, no installation can ever include enough cameras in the right places, at the right angles, with the right focal length to get the shot for a positive identification.

But let’s say we did have the right video footage. The fact remains that the incident is now history, the automobile dealership has experienced a loss and it is far fetched to think that the picture of the thief could be cross referenced in a police data base leading to recovery of the stolen property. Further, let’s not forget the costly human resources that had to be asserted to search through hours of video footage and burn the DVD.
